Reading Time: 4 minutes

We Are All Attention Exhausted

I honestly think most of us are mentally tired because our brains are constantly consuming too much information every single second. And the worst part is, most of us don’t even realize that we are getting manipulated every single second.

Let me give you an example: The moment we wake up, we grab our good friend, our phone, and start scrolling through Instagram reels, YouTube shorts, TikTok, and the worst part is the notifications we get when we turn on mobile data/WiFi (if you keep your internet connection active throughout the night, then you are not my type, sorry). And before we even properly wake up, our brain has already consumed more information than people probably consumed in an entire day a few years ago.

Honestly, our attention span is completely broken.

I still remember when people used to watch 10-15 minute YouTube videos (I still do, by the way) without skipping or skimming through the timeline. Videos like tutorials, documentaries, podcasts, gaming videos, random tech videos, anything. We used to sit and actually focus on the content.

Now if a reel doesn’t hook us within the first 2-3 seconds, we instantly scroll away like our life depends on it.

And honestly, platforms like Instagram and YouTube have spent millions on psychology and understanding how to manipulate our brains with constant dopamine doses, so they know this very well.

So that’s exactly why every reel or short video now starts with phrases like:

“You won’t believe this…”
“Here’s the secret to make $1 Billion in one day…”
“Watch till the end…”
“This changed my life…”
“Claude Code will blow your mind…”
“AI is replacing Web Designers…”

Every content creator is fighting for our attention. Every app is competing to keep us scrolling for just one more minute. And one more minute becomes one hour very easily.

We are slowly losing the ability to sit quietly.

We struggle to focus on deep work. Let me ask you one thing, how long has it been since you sat down for 4-5 hours straight without looking at your phone or getting distracted? I know, you are in a Blank Mode now.

We cannot watch long videos peacefully anymore, and here’s the worst part, I used to read long books in my childhood, and now reading books feels harder.

Here’s a real example from me: Sometimes I open Instagram just to reply to one message, but then suddenly 45 minutes disappear somewhere between reels of productivity, bikes, coding memes, gym edits, travel videos, AI tools, football clips, and random conspiracy theories.

And let me break down the honest truth: More than half of the reels we watch don’t even matter after 10 minutes.

But our brain still keeps asking for more because these platforms are designed exactly for that, constant dopamine.

I think infinite scrolling is probably one of the most addictive things ever created on the internet.

Just endless content. You, your thumb, and your dopamine. The brands behind this are extracting millions from you without you even realizing it.

Here’s what happens, our brain keeps expecting the next dopamine hit:

“Maybe the next reel will be better.”
“Maybe the next video will teach me something useful.”
“Maybe just one last scroll.”

And suddenly your entire evening is gone.

I think one of the biggest problems is that we now confuse stimulation with relaxation.

Scrolling reels for 2 hours is 100% not relaxation.

Your brain is still processing hundreds of cuts, sounds, captions, faces, transitions, music changes, hooks, emotions, and information continuously.

That’s not rest, that’s constant stimulation.

And over time, this silent attention exhaustion starts affecting everything you do like work, creativity, sleep, focus, conversations, patience, and most importantly, thinking deeply.

Sometimes I genuinely feel like we are forgetting how to be bored. And boredom was actually where creativity used to start. Not sure about you, but for me, the most real and valid ideas came when I was bored and had nothing to work on. Some of the best ideas used to come when people were simply sitting quietly, walking, traveling, staring outside windows, or doing absolutely nothing.

Now the moment boredom hits, we immediately open Instagram and start using our thumbs to scroll through the infinite.

We are not giving our brains any empty space to think, process, rest, etc.

And honestly, I’m not trying to act like I’m completely different from everyone else here.

Even I scroll reels.
Even I waste time.
Even I fall into the “just 5 minutes” trap and waste 2 hours.

But recently, I started noticing how mentally calm I feel when I stay away from short-form content for a while.

My thoughts feel 100% clearer, I can focus longer, I feel less anxious mentally, and strangely, time starts feeling slower again in a good way.

I think the internet is amazing when used properly.

We can learn anything, whether it is how to build businesses, connect with people globally, or discover opportunities.

But at the same time, if we don’t consciously control what we consume, these platforms will happily consume our attention forever and make millions.

And honestly, attention is probably one of the most valuable things we have left today, and let’s use it for a good purpose.

If you have come this far, then you are in my 1% club who still have more than a 3-second attention span.

Until next time, stay strong and keep learning.
