Coke, Caffeine, and Afternoon Productivity

Before I begin, I just wanted to tell you that I am not a Coke addict, I just rarely consume it. I know all the bad effects of drinking these types of cold drinks. But consuming them in moderation doesn’t harm us that much. I barely drink around 4 cans a month (or even less sometimes).

And if you are wondering about sugar content and all, then no, I don’t drink regular Coke, I drink the Zero Sugar one. (I know it has sucralose, but hey, it has no calories and that is one of the factors I care about as a fitness enthusiast.)

Ok, now let’s come to the real part of having a Coke in the afternoons after a big lunch.

You might already know that sometimes after having lunch, we feel sleepy, tired, and not really in the mood to work, and that’s because we Indians eat too many carbohydrates, and that too with high glycemic index foods like rice, which spike our insulin pretty quickly and then we end up having an insulin crash.

And this is where caffeine comes in. Caffeine can actually help improve alertness, concentration, focus, and even productivity, especially when you have important work to do but your body just wants to shut down and sleep. It gives that small mental push which helps you get back into work mode again.

Sometimes after a heavy lunch, especially one full of rice or other carb-heavy foods, our brain just feels slow. You open your laptop, stare at the screen, and suddenly even the easiest tasks feel difficult to start. That sleepy afternoon feeling is honestly one of the biggest productivity killers for people who work on computers all day.

And that’s why a bit of caffeine helps. It kinda wakes your brain back up again. You feel slightly more active, your concentration improves, and you slowly get back into your workflow. Not like some movie scene where suddenly you become superhuman or anything, but enough to stop feeling lazy and actually start doing the work you were avoiding for the last 20 minutes.

And you may ask me, “Amar, you can have a coffee instead of a Coke.” Yes, that’s actually a really good question, and yes, I do have coffee (of course, black coffee) in the afternoons after having a big lunch. But you know, some days we just feel like drinking something cold, fizzy, refreshing, and slightly sweet while working, especially during hot afternoons.

And Coke also has some other ingredients which boost our concentration. I won’t get too in-depth with the ingredients here, don’t worry.

Oh, and if you are wondering what is on my screen, I was reading about the new WordPress 7.0 update.

Anyway, this is all I have to say about Coke and Productivity.

Until next time, stay strong and keep learning.
